In the earth sciences, permeability (commonly symbolized as ‘k’) is a measure of the ability of a material (typically, a rock or unconsolidated material) to transmit fluids. Permeability testing is used as an alternate method to percolation testing to determine the absorption rate of soil for a septic drain field or ‘leach field.’
These tests are performed in the laboratory using soil samples taken from the site of the proposed disposal field. The permeability is determined by the soil permeability class rating technique, which is based upon a hydrometer analysis and a sieve analysis together with evaluation of soil morphological properties.
